As the days grew shorter and darker we had our first issue to overcome. The scaffold started going up quick and as we got a closer look on the lower roofs. They were well and truly rotten. This meant they would not cope with the weight of the scaffold needed to access the upper roof. The scaffolders came up with a plan to build an internal scaffold which would punch through the lower roof and down into the basement floor along both wings.

When they told me this my heart sunk a little… this would mean clearing out and bringing down all the internal walls and false ceilings in both wings.  We would need to do this as quickly as possible to prevent delay and allow them access. Those who remember what it looked like originally will understand what a big job this was. Made more difficult with the dangerous state the internal building was in. Floor boards and joists were rotten and crumbling even under my weight.

This is how you might remember the inside of the building looking. A photo taken from the first encounter evening after us becoming the legal owners. We were able to have a fantastic time of worship, praise and prayer thanking God for his provision. (complete with a live action shot of Clive dancing for Joy!)

As you can see there were many internal walls separating a middle ‘dance-floor’ area with a stage. There were 3 different suspended ceilings made from foam squares and then another of plasterboard. Off this main area within the wings were multiple rooms; toilets, offices, a studio and a few other bar areas.

Going… Going…. Going not quite gone…. yet!

After a hard 2 weeks of demolition the space was cleared and the internal scaffold could be put up. This finally gave access for the roofers to start stripping and replacing the top roof… they were so quick we barely caught a photo of them in the process!

Have a read of my next blog for a big shout out to the members of my awesome demolition team!!!

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT?

Ongoing roof work, continuing the replacement of the top roof. We will be continuing to sort the rubbish, and find a cost effective method of waste removal and recycling. We are also starting to access the stonework and windows and get some quotes and ideas from contractors on repair works.
